The Modality of Sarîk in Tannaitic Hebrew

The Paper argues that the word sarîk in tannaitic Hebrew does not, despite claims to the contrary, indicate permissibility. Analysis of apparent counter-examples illustrates the relationship between teleological necessity and weak deontic obligation.
